Michigan Driver Responsibility Fees for Points and Misdemeanors

Driver responsibility fees are payments made to the Michigan Department of Treasury as a result of accumulated points on a driver’s license, or a criminal misdemeanor conviction for a traffic or vehicle offense. Failure to pay driver responsibility fees on time can result in a suspended driver’s license. Criminal penalties for alcohol-related driving offenses are already severe, and the prospect of additional fees for multiple years after conviction can be stressful. Grabel & Associates will work to do everything possible to fight unnecessary fees and wrongful conviction, so contact us immediately. If you have been accused of drunk driving, operating under the influence or liquor, OWI, reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, or any other driving charge, we are here to help.

Category 1 and 2 Driver Responsibility Fees in Michigan

The first type of driver responsibility fee is a result of points accumulated on a driver’s license. These points can result from traffic violations such as speeding or failing to stop when required. If you obtain 7 points on your driver’s license in the two years following a conviction, you will be responsible for a $100 fee. Additional points on your driver’s license will result in enhanced fees, with 15 points resulting in driver responsibility fees of $500.

Other offenses can result in a second type of driver responsibility fee, often more serious than the fees resulting from driver’s license points. If you are convicted of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI) or another drunk driving charge, you could face a $1,000 annual fee for two years. Other offenses such as reckless driving, operating with alcohol present when underage, or operating while impaired can result in $500 annual driver responsibility fees. Driver responsibility fees must be paid promptly or a driver’s license fee suspension will take effect, which can result in additional fees for the eventual reinstatement of your driving privileges.
