Detroit, Michigan Prostitution Laws

State sex crime laws don’t technically define prostitution, and have more of a focus on bringing those who hire prostitutes, detain or transport prostitutes, or commit other serious offenses of that nature. It is still illegal to engage in prostitution, however, as stated in Section 750.451 and other relevant sections of the Michigan Penal Code. According these laws, anyone who engages in a first-time prostitution offense can be sentenced to up to 93 days behind bars and a $500 fine. With a prior conviction on record, these penalties can increase to up to a year behind bars and a fine of up to $1,000. If a person has two prior convictions on record, up to 2 years behind bars and a fine of $2,000 can result.

Other more serious prostitution-related offenses include accepting, receiving, levying, or appropriating the earnings of a prostitute, which is a felony punishable by up to 20 years behind bars, as outlined in Section 750.457. Placing one’s spouse in a house of prostitution is also a felony punishable by up to 20 years, which is stated in Section 750.456. Similarly, detaining a person in a house of prostitution can lead to up to 20 years, with a minimum sentence of 2 years in prison. Additional penalties can result in cases involving minors.
