Can a Juvenile Be Put On the Sex Offender Registry?

One of the most serious penalties that can result after a sex crime is sex offender registration, because of the lasting effects that this record can have. In adult sex crime cases, many offenders are required to register as sex offenders after they are found guilty of an offense and registration can last a significant period of time. While the majority of juvenile offenders are not required to register as sex offenders, it is possible in serious cases if the juvenile is at least 14 years of age or older.

Juvenile Sex Offender Registry in Michigan

In the state of Michigan, juveniles who have been found guilty of a sex offense are required to register in some situations. Sex offenses are categorized into three tiers based on severity, and individuals who classify as tier 3 offenders (the most serious classification) and who are at least 14 years of age may be required to register on the Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry.

One exception deals with “Romeo and Juliet” cases, which involve an alleged victim between 13 and 15 and a defendant no more than 4 years older. In these cases and a few other rare exceptions, the court may decide to not require sex offender registration. Working with an attorney will help you properly utilize your legal rights and protect against sex offender registration along with the lasting penalties that could result.

What is Sex Offender Registration?

When a person is required to register as a sex offender, personal information such as his or her name, address, and details of the offense are stored in a public database. For juvenile offenders, this information is not released to the public until he or she becomes an adult, however offenders under the age of 18 may still be required to register.

Sex offender registration makes it difficult to live where you want, get a job, obtain a loan, receive scholarships and more, which is why it can be life changing. The Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry (PSOR) will require you to carry the negative stigma that follows sex offenders for years after other penalties and restitution have been completed.
