Juvenile Crime Lawyer in Michigan

Juvenile court is part of Michigan family court, which deals with legal problems within families. Anyone under the age of 18 who is accused of a crime can be tried in juvenile court, however sentencing as an adult is possible if the offense is serious.

Work with an attorney as soon as possible to ensure your rights are protected and every legal option is explored.

Juvenile offenders have the right to an attorney, the right to remain silent, and the right to confront witnesses, call witnesses, and testify. Working with an experienced juvenile defense lawyer will help you utilize your rights and work towards the best possible case outcome.

Criminal Penalties for Juvenile Offenders in Michigan

If a youth has been accused of a criminal offense in Michigan, there are multiple outcomes possible. The judge assigned to the initial juvenile court hearing may:

  • dismiss the case, allowing the juvenile defendant to go free
  • recommend counseling as per the “Juvenile Diversion Act.” The youth must agree to counseling.
  • place the juvenile offender on the “Juvenile Consent Calendar”
  • allow the juvenile to be placed on the formal calendar

If an offender is placed on the formal calendar, he or she will face the penalties set for that charge. If convicted, he or she will face a record, which could last until he or she is of age or longer. The juvenile consent calendar allows for a youth to complete certain conditions set by a judge, and in exchange any record of the offense will be cleared after completion.

Sentencing as an adult occurs when charges are extremely serious, in which case youths are moved to the regular court system rather than the Michigan juvenile court. Contact an attorney if you or your child has been accused of any criminal offense and protect against criminal punishment.
